  4. OVERVIEW

  6. F-TENT will detect and disinfect the Tentacle_III.10496 virus.
  7. This document gives a brief description of the Tentacle virus and
  8. explains how to use F-TENT to detect and disinfect this virus.

  10. ABOUT THE TENTACLE VIRUS
  11.  
  12. This DOS-based virus was found in the wild in September 1996.
  13.  
  14. The virus infects only DOS executables (MZ). The virus adds a
  15. new segment to the executable and modifies the structure of the file.
  16. It does not stay memory resident.
  17.  
  18. The author of this virus also wrote the Tentacle and Tentacle_II
  19. viruses.
  20.  
  21.  
  22. SYMPTOMS
  23.  
  24. Tentacle causes no obvious symptoms, except slowing the PC down (the
  25. infection process is slow). For this reason it is recommended that
  26. suspect PCs be scanned using the F-TENT utility.

  29. HOW TO USE F-TENT3
  30.  
  31. Run F-TENT3 with the drive letter of directory as a parameter. For example:
  32.  
  33.         F-TENT3 C:
  34.         F-TENT3 Z:\USERS
  35.  
  36. If F-TENT3 finds the virus, you will be notified. Then, type
  37. F-TENT3 <drive parameter> /DISINF, and F-TENT will disinfect
  38. any infected files.

  41. WHAT ABOUT FLOPPIES?
  42.  
  43. Since infected files may have been copied to floppy diskettes, you
  44. will want to scan your floppy diskettes as well. To do this, invoke
  45. F-TENT3 using the /MULTI switch (eg F-TENT3 A: /MULTI).
